Back to the Cotswolds - September 2007 (by Adam)

Friday, 21 September 2007

We picked up a hire car after work and the five of us - Cat, my mum, Warwick, Warwick's son Alistair, and I - set off for the Cotswolds. The Friday night traffic out of London was not too bad, and we were in the village of Bledington by 8.00pm. We stopped there for a really nice dinner at the Kings Head Inn, then made our way to our accommodation for the weekend, the Crown Inn (http://www.crowninnblockley.com/), a 14th century coaching inn in the village of Blockley. Blockley was a village that Cat and I had really fallen for during our visit to the Cotswolds in May. We had a nightcap in the bar and then called it a night.

After breakfast at the Crown Inn, we set off for a day of driving through the Cotswolds countryside. We stopped in a number of towns, including Stow-on-the-Wold, Broadway, Chipping Camden and Chipping Norton, and we also climbed Broadway Tower (which, we were informed is the 2nd highest point in the Cotswolds), just outside of Broadway.

We spent a couple of hours in Chipping Camden, where my mum enjoyed the shops while the rest of us watched England vs Samoa in the Rugby World Cup. We then returned to Blockley, and Cat, my mum and I went for a walk through the nearby countryside, while Warwick and Al opted for an afternoon nap.

We then had a really enjoyable dinner at the Crown Inn, followed by an after dinner port in front of an open fire in the drawing room.

Cat, my mum and I started the day with an early morning walk through the nearby countryside, while Warwick and Al opted for a bit of a sleep in. Perhaps a theme is emerging?

We again had breakfast at the Crown Inn, with presents for Warwick as it was his birthday. We then set off for another day of driving through the Cotswolds countryside. We again stopped in a number of towns, including Upper and Lower Slaughter and Bourton-on-the-Water, before stopping for a late - and very tasty - Sunday roast at the Green Dragon Inn, in Cowley.

It was then back to London. At times during the journey, all 4 passengers were fast asleep! It had been a really wonderful weekend away in one of England's most beautiful corners.
