Polo at Windsor - June 2007 (by Adam)

Cat and I had our first taste of polo, watching the final of the Queen's Cup, at the Guards Polo Club (http://www.guardspoloclub.com/), in Windsor.

Together with a group of about 20 friends, we made the trip out to Windsor via various modes of transport (tube then train then bus then taxi).

We had a fantastic picnic lunch (thanks to the organisational genius of Natalie Glanville), washed down with plenty of Pimms...

After lunch, as the players warmed up for the match, we strolled across the playing field and took our seats in the stands...

There was lots of pomp and ceremony before the match, with a marching band and the players being introduced to the Queen...

The match then got underway, with Loro Piana (from Argentina) taking on the Packer family's Ellerston White (from Australia, of course)...

We were lucky to have a very friendly English bloke in the row in front of us, who provided an excellent beginner's guide to polo (which included me asking him at one point whether or not it was common in polo for the players to change their ponies during the breaks between chukkas, to which he responded: "My dear chap, there is nothing common about polo")...

We all made the trip out to the field after the 3rd chukka (ie half-time) to repair divots...

Loro Piana were ultimately victorious in extra time, winning 12-11. It really was an exciting finish. The Queen then presented their captain with the Queen's Cup...

It had been a very English day out.
